The Objects of the Society are to advance education by the study, development, and application of psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy in Forensic and Complex Needs mental health settings including community settings and other public and appropriate private settings (e.g. prisons and probation services) throughout the United Kingdom.

The Forensic Psychotherapy Society was established in 2013 as a training institution and professional association for Forensic Psychodynamic Psychotherapists.

The Society is a Member Institution of the British Psychoanalytic Council and can offer membership of both organisations to those who have completed the Society's training or who can demonstrate having completed an equivalent training, as well as substantial experience in providing forensic psychotherapy.
